Today Nintendo announced via press release that the new Switch console sold over 906,000 console in March in the United States, according to NPD data.
On top of that, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sold 1.3 million copies nationwide, of which 925,000 units for Switch and nearly 460,000 units sold for Wii U. This means that more Switch copies of the game were sold than actual console, meaning that quite a few collectors bought both the standard and the limited editions of the game.
As a result, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the fastest-selling Nintendo launch game of all time, as well as the fastest-selling game ever in The Legend of Zelda series.
Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime accompanied the announcement with a statement: “Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different. With its various play modes and the innovative features of the Joy-Con controllers, Nintendo Switch provides unique experiences that people can take with them anywhere and share with anyone.”
The press release also mentions that shipments haven’t been able to keep up with demand, but Nintendo is working hard to cope, with more systems continually being shipped.
Nintendo Switch sales managed to put the consoles at the top of March’s NPD rankings, with PS4 ranking second among home consoles, followed by Xbox One.
We’ll know more about worldwide figures on April 27th, when Nintendo will disclose its fiscal year earnings report.
